How much money you should spend on an engagement ring depends on your income, what you can afford to spend and how important the ring is to you and future spouse.

Rings are usually marked up much higher than the base prices, however, if you know material costs you will understand the charges for design, labor and merchandising. 

The selection of the right diamond solitaire has different criteria for every couple, and there are many choices available.  Worry more about getting the item you need, not the price. Do not pay more then the ring is worth. Otherwise there is no right or wrong amount if you follow this one rule.
