Women don’t generally differentiate between their costly and lesser priced jewelry; they treat them both with the same care. Handcrafted wooden jewelry boxes for women act as a safe and secure place to store these trinkets. A piece of jewelry might be a souvenir from a past relationship or of a beautiful place. It brings a whiff of nostalgia to the present and most women are very sentimental and tend to hold on to the slightest reminder of happier days in their life.
Different kinds of wood and embellishments are used in the making of wooden jewelry boxes. These boxes can be quite reasonably priced depending on the type of wood and the level of detail in the designing. This does not mean that the boxes won’t last but rather that they may not have been made from a rich or exotic wood and the embellishments may not be elaborate and time-consuming.
Simple designs can also look great and some boxes made of rubber wood, which is easily available, and embellished with some fine marquetry work using cherry and maple veneers , and burls, are not costly at all.
Burls are generally a product of ‘cambium’; a single layer of cells that lies right between the tissue of the inner bark, the phloem, and the wood, the xylem. These cells divide constantly and produce a second layer of xylem cells. In layman’s terms, the cambial cells produce an external growth that looks very much like a tumor, on the bark or the roots of the tree. These ‘tumors’ are called burls and are said to be caused by undue stress on the tree due to environmental or even human factors.
Maple burls sometimes look white or rusty in color but are mostly very pink. A lot of wastage can happen while matching maple burls. Walnut burl is usually reddish or grayish brown in color and is from some parts of Arizona and California. Nicely shaped walnut burls are very rare and the black walnut burl is the most popular.
Burls of exotic woods like Zebrawood, Thuya, and Kewazinga are definitely costlier but depending on the quantity used, it may not be very highly priced. Thuya burl is said to be revered in Morocco and is said to weigh up to 1000 lbs. It gives out an aroma like cedar especially when it is being cut. This soft wood can be carved easily and polished . But like almost all burls, this also tends to darken as the years go by.
So if you are looking to buy a wooden jewelry box that will not burn a hole in your pocket, select a simple box made of common wood but one that has some intricate marquetry done with veneers and burls of exotic wood. This will look sleek and sophisticated and yet not cost much.
