Cubic Zirconium is the most preferred and known substitute for  diamond, though it  weights more and looks duller than a pure diamond and may even wane in color with usage. The cubic zirconium costs less than the moissanite, an exquisite synthetically made stone relative to a gem found in the heart of a meteorite. This kind of stone is somewhat harder than a diamond with twice the brilliance. Of course it  increases the beauty of the diamond but also leads to identification by those who want the muted fire of the diamond.Some people feel  it has a faint greenish tinge, due to the way it refracts light differently. It is mostly a persons own style which dictates the pros and cons of Moissanite.

Used as a diamond substitute for over a hundred years are white sapphires. The white sapphire is a beautiful stone in itself and the beauty of it is it can be cut just like a diamond but one must be aware that it is softer and less durable.

The only limits to considering a stone that is outside the diamond look-alike field are those you set yourself. Ruby, sapphire, jade, and similar hard stones are good choices since the stone will be worn constantly over a long period of time.

A good choice would be a hue that blends well with the spectrum of colors you tend to wear regularly. The entire world of fine stones is open beyond that.
